How To Make Money Out Of Your Unused Garage

A garage is a useful space to have and yet many of us neglect this space, using it purely as a dumping ground for clutter. There are lots of ways in which you can repurpose your garage – some of these methods can even be a way of earning you some extra money. Here are just a few ways in which you can make money out of your garage.

Sell your clutter

There’s likely to be a lot of stuff that’s been banished to your garage never to be used again. Selling this clutter could be a quick and easy way of making some extra money. You can sell a lot of second hand items online using sites like Gumtree – these sites allow you to sell to people locally so that you don’t have to pay for postage. Alternatively, you could attend flea markets or host a yard sale. Even broken items and half-used materials can often be recycled for cash if you can find the right company for the job. You can sell scrap copper to recycling companies and even half-empty cans of paint to construction companies. Even if you don’t get much for it, something is better than nothing.

Convert it into a bedroom for a lodger to use

A garage could be big enough to be turned into a guest bedroom. This could be used for guests or it could be used to make an income by renting it out to a lodger. There are many people out there looking for a cheap place to live on their own. Most garages are isolated from the rest of the home giving your lodger some privacy and giving you some distance from them as opposed to renting out an upstairs bedroom. You could even build an on-suite bathroom in the room and cooking facilities and effectively turn it into a bedsit, so long as the garage is big enough. Make sure that your garage space meets legal requirements so that it can be classed as a livable space (it should have heating, adequate insulation and electricity).

Rent it out as storage space

You could even rent out your garage as storage space. There are sites that allow you to advertise space in your home for storage. By charging less than self-storage supply centers, you could offer a cheap place for other people to store hobby equipment, inherited possessions or business supplies. No conversion costs are likely to be required, although you may want to add some security measures such as adding extra locks and a camera for the peace of mind of your clients.

Rent it out as a parking space

You could also rent your garage out as a parking space. This could be an off-road parking opportunity for neighbors – there could be local people in your neighborhood that don’t want to park their car on the curb. Alternatively, you could rent it out to people travelling in the area as cheap parking.
