Paying Your Dues: Roles You’ll Take Before Landing The Dream Job

Here’s a fun fact for you today, very few people leave college and immediately end up in the position or even the industry that they want to be in. If you want to make sure you’re one of the few, there are a couple things you need to do. Ace your exams and leave college with the best grades, but that’s not all. Join at least two different social clubs and make sure that you are the captain or at least one of them. Nope, we’re not done yet. You’re also going to need to spend your summers off being productive, working jobs often for no pay at the most prestigious businesses that will take you on. Then, you’ll have a shot at gaining the big job offer as soon as you leave college. If you don’t do this, here are a few job positions you will your probably end up doing to pay your dues.

Copywriter

It’s a good way to make ends meet because the pay is decent enough. You may start with this position if you are working your way up in marketing, journalism or any other role that involves writing. Copywriting usually means that you will be given explicit instructions on what to write and you’ll have the joy of typing it up. It doesn’t provide that much room for imagination, and it can be tedious, time-consuming work. But, as an entry position, they pay is pretty darn good, so there’s that. You’ll also gain a lot of experience writing on a lot of different topics. However, if you want to work your way up don’t operate as a freelancer. Aside from gaining a lot of experience, this can be a dead end.

Bringing In The Coffee

You’ll wear the suit, you’ll look the part, you’ll enter the conference room and – once you’ve dropped the coffee off – walk right back out again. It’s a small role but one that can lead to great rewards particularly if you are noticed by the right individual. At a key moment, someone might ask your opinion. Bear in mind, they’ll be treating you as a layperson. But impress with the exact answer they were searching for or the right level of initiative and they might just take an interest in your progress.

Moving Things Around

There are lots of examples of this. Ever wonder why hospitals have rolling medical supply carts? Well, that’s so someone can push them around to different rooms. Don’t feel bad though, this role is usually taken by an intern and one day they’ll be a high up doctor. Or, how about a legal office? Here, you’ll often have people working in the mail room. Again, the right initiative and you can slowly but surely rise from there to the head office.

Sales Assistant

Finally, sales assistant might just seem like a job that you took on in the summer. But, it doesn’t have to be. Working as a sales assistant, you can eventually move up through the ranks to become a floor manager, then a section manager, up to a store manager. Eventually, you can enter into the head office, and that’s where you’ll start earning the big bucks. It can lead to you becoming one of the heads of the company. However, you need to be really determined and hardworking to get that far.
